Volunteer Requirements & Responsibilities

Volunteers are required to:

• Be at least 18 years of age
• Have a High School Diploma or GED
• Have reliable, independent transportation
• Complete Friends of Literacy Volunteer Orientation and Training

Volunteer responsibilities:

• Commit to tutoring 1 to 3 hours per week for at least six months, with a Knoxville area adult education program
• Be dependable and on time and follow through on commitments
• Help those you work with become independent learners
• Keep a record of your volunteer hours

Friends of Literacy also hopes that volunteers will:

• Become knowledgeable about the organization and stay current with what Friends of Literacy is doing so you can be an advocate for supporting the organization and adult learners
• Make a $20 donation that will cover the cost of training time and materials
• Promote a positive image of the organization and represent the spirit of Friends of Literacy toward adult learners -- "Supporting Second Chances"
