Tennessee Valley Reads

Tennessee Valley Reads brings education closer to the adults who need it by fostering other organizations, churches, and civic groups as they implement literacy programs for adults at various locations in our community.  If you are interested in partnering with Friends of Literacy to develop a literacy program at your organization, please contact Teresa Brittain at 865-549-7007 or via email at Teresa@friendsofliteracy.org.

Basic Adult Education

The Basic Adult Education Program at Friends of Literacy provides reading, writing, and math classes to adults who read at or below a fourth grade level or who cannot consistently use mathematics to reason and solve basic mathematical problems in real world situations.  Adults are grouped with peers based on academic level and work in small learning cohorts facilitated by an instructor.

Intermediate Adult Education

The Intermediate Adult Education Program provides intermediate reading, writing, math, and computer classes to prepare adults for better job opportunities or for high school equivalency testing.    Adults are grouped with peers based on academic level and work in small learning cohorts facilitated by an instructor.  Additionally, students are encouraged to use specific computer programs for reinforcement of lessons. During office hours, students may use our computers for studying.

Literacy and Math Tutoring

For our students needing additional help outside of the classroom, Friends of Literacy offers one-on-one tutoring at our downtown office and at other Knoxville locations. Tutoring sessions are led by dedicated volunteers.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor please apply here.
