Programs for Adults

Tennessee Valley Reads

Tennessee Valley Reads brings education closer to adults who need it by expanding our beginning readers program to include not just the Friends of Literacy office, but also satellite locations throughout the area. We foster other organizations, churches, and civic groups, as they implement literacy programs for adults across our community.  If you are interested in partnering with Friends of Literacy to develop a literacy program at your organization, please contact Teresa Brittain at 865-549-7007 or via email at teresa@friendsofliteracy.org.

Adult BASIC Education

Adult basic education at Friends of Literacy consists of language arts and math classes for students at an elementary level of literacy.  Adults are grouped with peers based on academic level and work in small learning cohorts facilitated by an instructor.

Literacy and Math Tutoring

For students needing additional help outside of the classroom or adults whose work schedules won't accommodate regular weekly classes, Friends of Literacy offers one-on-one tutoring at our office and other locations. Tutoring sessions are led by dedicated volunteers.  If you are interested in becoming a volunteer tutor, please apply here.
